Hendon Golf Club
Our History

1900 – Golf of a very primitive kind was played at Hendon.  Walter Mull, the local Bank Manager, and Tommy Cutting arranged terms with the local farmer Mr E Slade an owner of Holders Hill Dairy Farm and marked out a small course of 9 holes on Slade’s 40 acres of grassland

1901-1902 – Played continued as in 1900, the members themselves cut the greens, the grass on the other parts of the course were kept fairly short by Slade’s sheep and cattle.

1903-1904 – Early in 1903 Mr J W Johnstone, Mr H Walduck and Dr Houlbrook became members of the Club and negioated a lease with Mr Slade for the land at a rental of £55 per year.  A public meeting was called to enrol more members, if successful, it would enable them to accept Slade’s offer.   The meeting was a great success and over 50 new members were elected and Hendon Golf Club was formed.

1905-1906 – A Clubhouse was built on the land recently acquired.  New greens were made, hedges and a number of trees removed, ditches were piped and filled in.  Horses and grass cutting machines were brought into cut fairways and other work was completed by members who volunteered to lend a hand.  So the Club progressed and the numbers of members increased.

1914 – The Great War came and many of the members joined the forces, others left behind kept the Club alive in the hope that there would be something to entertain the boys when they returned.  When peace came it brought new members, amongst them WW Greenshields and Mr A G Emblow (in 1926 Mr Greenshields was Honorary Secretary and Mr Emblow our Honorary Treasurer). At this period additional land was purchased and part of the old course disposed of with the object of extending and improving the course.  Plans were prepared by H S Colt, the foremost golf architect of the day, 13 new greens were made others remodelled and 100 new bunkers built from the back tees the course now measured about 6,300 yards.

1927 – the new Clubhouse was built providing accommodation for all its members.  J W Greenshields was appointed Secretary.

1929 – further improvements were made to the course which increased the number of members, with some members donating trees and flowering shrubs which were planted in suitable place.

1939 – with the outbreak the military requisitioned the Clubhouse, leaving the members with a small room only. 22 acres of land comprising of the 14th, 16th & 17th holes were ploughed up and planted with corn.

1940 – a serious fire occurred causing serious damage to the Clubhouse.

1965 – the Clubhouse was relocated to its current position.

When the present Clubhouse was built in 1965 it was considered one of the best in the country. The Centenary of the Club, in 2003, resulted in major refurbishments both inside and out to the Clubhouse, producing larger locker rooms and a magnificent balcony to sit out on in balmy, sunny days. The interior was also renovated and the attractive lounge and dining room provide a welcoming atmosphere to Members and Visitors alike.
